As the year comes to an end, it’s time for the traditional 'best of' lists. This year, we decided to turn to our developers at funda to ask: Which blog post stood out to you the most so far? The results are in, and this is our best-of list for 2024.
We asked the members of the funda blog's editorial team and our developers to share which blog post resonated with them, and whether it was inspiring, informative, or just plain useful. The results revealed something interesting: while our engineers appreciated highly technical content, they were equally inspired by blog posts about career shifts, practical work tips, team dynamics, and more.
We hope these top picks inspire you, too - whether they help you sharpen your skills, rethink your career path, or find smarter ways to work. Here’s to learning, growing, and being inspired as we head into the new year.
Demonstrating our standards at funda
Let’s start with our CTO, Eduardo Neves, who shared his picks for the best blog posts over time - those written by software engineer Anna Huseinova and product designer Marcela Ramos about the Saved Search feature:
- How funda's Team Search enhanced the saved search feature with OpenSearch by Anna
- From design to launch: the release of funda's multiple saved search feature by Marcela
Eduardo found these blog posts very interesting because they provide a clear view of what it takes to go from an idea to a fully released feature that meets funda’s high standards. For him, they highlight both the importance of customer feedback and the adaptability needed to handle unique technical challenges.
Work-life balance
Lars Schuitema, one of our frontend developers, picked Tom van Lieshout’s blog post as his favourite: Game changer: Tom's career shift from musician to engineer at funda. Tom’s journey from professional musician to flutter developer - and eventually joining funda - was both inspiring and relatable for Lars. Like Tom, Lars balances his career as a developer with a unique passion: being a professional kickboxer. While music remains a hobby for Tom, he’s found his true calling in tech. For Lars, Tom’s story is a great example of how following your passions can open the door to exciting new opportunities.
New connections
Imke Hamacher, our creative copywriter and part of the editorial team for the engineering blog, picked the blog post from our front-end engineer Marijn Kok: How we tackled our major front-end migration to Nuxt 3. What stood out for Imke was the actual impact of the blog post. After reading it, a front-end developer from another company reached out to Marijn, leading to a lunch meeting at funda. They shared ideas, discussed processes, and even made plans to possibly collaborate in the future.
It’s a great reminder of how a blog post can spark new connections. So, if you’re curious about funda, our authors, or the technologies we use, don’t hesitate to reach out - you never know where it might lead!
Miscellaneous
We had quite a few developers eager to share their input, so we’ve gathered their favourite blogs below. Interestingly, two of our developers couldn’t pick just one blog post - they ended up choosing two or even three favourites!
David’s choice
Our developer David Soff chose the blog post written by software engineers Nicola du Preez and Zishan Khushi Pasha: Legacy migration: How we rebuilt the Listing Detail page with a small team. For David, this blog post captures how funda empowers small teams to tackle big challenges and achieve impressive results.
Melvin’s choice
Back-end developer Melvin Zehl’s pick was an older blog, but still relevant: How Golden Paths give our developers more time to actually develop. He appreciated how the blog clearly outlines the approaches and strategies funda follows. Although it was written nearly two years ago (July 2022) - a long time in the fast-paced world of software development - it remains just as relevant and insightful today.
Zishan’s picks
Software engineer Zishan Khushi Pasha couldn’t decide on just one favourite and ended up choosing two.
- His first pick was the blog post by fellow software engineer Filip Davidse: Leaving Native behind: Our transition to an integrated Flutter experience. Zishan liked how it simplifies a complex topic with a lot of history and showcases its significant positive impact.
- His second pick was the blog post about the Funda AI Hackathon 2024, in which we recapped the event together with three of our engineers. Zishan found it inspiring to read about the creative ideas that emerged during the event. He felt it captured the positive, collaborative energy that defines funda’s teams.
Fatih’s favourites
And finally, we have developer Fatih Cebeci, who couldn’t settle on just one favourite either. Instead, he highlighted three that stood out for him, each for a different reason.
- The first, How we use modular pipelines to empower our development teams, written by software engineer Tom Freijsen, offers a fascinating look at funda’s DevOps culture. It explains how platform engineering empowers teams to build their own pipelines, helping them release features faster and more efficiently. For Fatih, this blog post is a perfect example of how funda enables teams to work smarter and achieve more.
- Another standout for him was the blog post from staff engineer Aleix Domenech: Decoding funda's tech stack: the reasons behind our choices. This post provides a detailed look at the tools and technologies funda engineers use daily. Fatih appreciated how it not only showcases a cutting-edge tech stack but also reveals how teams collaborate and innovate. For those considering joining funda, it offers a transparent and engaging behind-the-scenes view.
- Finally, Why making mistakes is ok, especially when dealing with legacy code, written by team lead Matheus de Lara Calache, struck a different chord. This blog post highlights the challenges of maintaining legacy applications while encouraging a practical, open-minded approach. For Fatih, it reflects funda’s commitment to learning, innovating and improving.
